##### Learning Objectives:

Students will:

- Use clock hands to tell the time in hours on the clock.
- Be able to tell what time the clock says in hours.

##### Materials:

- One “The Grouchy Ladybug” Magna-Tiles® Structures story set
- One “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle book
- A picture of a clock or a play clock
- Paper strips or tongue depressors to use as clock hands or download this PDF of one set of clock hands or this PDF with 6 sets of clock hands.

##### Directions:

#1. Explain to the students that they are going to learn about telling time today.

#2. Show the students the picture of the clock or the play clock. Talk to the students about how the hands move around the clock to show the time. Point out the lengths of the hour hand and the minute hand. Emphasize that the minute hand moves around the clock each hour, but the hour hand only moves to the next hour.

#3. Show the students the triangles that make up the clock in the Grouchy Ladybug Magna-Tiles® Structures story set. Give one of the triangles to each student. Tell the students that they are going to create the clock together. Explain that you are going to begin with the number 12 because it is at the top of the clock. Have the student with the number 12 put that number straight up and down on the floor or a magnetic surface. Then beginning with the number 1, have the other students take turns adding their numbers to the “clock” until it is complete.

#4. Show the students the paper strips or tongue depressors or paper cut-outs that you are using to make the clock hands. Remind the students that the longer “hand” is the hour hand and the shorter “hand” is the minute hand.

#5. * *Show the students how to show one o’clock with the hour hand on the one and the minute hand on the twelve. Continue to show the students each time on the hour.

#6. Tell the students a time, like five o’clock, and have one of them put the hands on the Grouchy Ladybug clock to show the time. Continue to do this until each student has a turn.

#7. Allow the students to say a time and pick another student to show that time on the clock.

#8. Ask the students what they learned today.

##### Assessment:

- Observe the students to make sure each student understands how to show the time by the hour.

##### Extension:

- Place the tiles at a center so the students can practice making the clock together and having each other show a time on the clock.
