#1. Explain to the students that you are going to read them a story about a caterpillar today.
#2. Ask the students if any of them have ever seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly or knows what happens when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. Discuss with the students what happens when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly.
#3. Read the students the story, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.
#4. After you have read the story, discuss with the students what happens at the beginning of the story. (ie. There is an egg on a leaf.) Discuss what happens in the middle of the story. (ie. The caterpillar eats a lot.) Discuss what happens at the end of the story. (ie. The caterpillar turns into a butterfly.)
#5. Show the students the MagnaTiles® Structures tiles. Have them help you put the pictures in the order that they happened in the story. (The MagnaTiles® Structures tiles will stick to a magnetic surface if you have a magnetic board or a magnetic white board.)
#6. Have the students take turns retelling the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.
Extension: The MagnaTiles® Structures tiles can be placed in a center for the students to practice retelling the story together.
Divide a paper into three sections or have the students fold the paper into 3 sections. In the first section, have the students draw a picture of what happens at the beginning of the story. In the second section, have the students draw a picture of what happens in the middle of the story. In the last section, have the students draw a picture of what happens at the end of the story.
